A summer with the Stars
Bailey Arnot – CA Box Hill
There are so many great things to look forward to when it comes to volunteering with our industry partners. For me, the most enjoyable moments have been working with the Melbourne Stars at their match day activations over the summer holidays for the 2019/20 Big Bash League Season.
I have had the opportunity to network with staff, work at fan activations with sponsors and stakeholders, and interact with players during on-field activities. Throughout these opportunities, I have acquired new customer relationship skills that will help me with a career in the sports industry after I complete my studies.
There are many different skills you need to use when working in the sports industry. Skills such as communication, professionalism, leadership and teamwork. Especially when working in a fast-paced environment like broadcasted sporting events that are regularly attracting thousands of fans. The skills I have learned are invaluable, I will be able to use them in a wide range of professional settings, regardless of the industry I work in.
There are numerous roles that I was unaware of before having the experience of working for a major sporting club. Some of the roles I was exposed to when working for the Stars were fan engagement roles, on-field sponsorship activations, and facilitating local competitions. In these situations, you are looked up to as a leader by younger members of the community.
It is important to take advantage of the opportunities students have access to at SEDA College. We are first in line when industry partners require additional assistance and when running events. These experiences facilitate professional networking opportunities and possible casual / part-time employment.
My advice is to take these opportunities; I am proud to represent SEDA College and grateful of the experiences my summer with the Stars provided and look forward to where these experiences will take me in my pathways into the Sport and Recreation Industry.
