Curriculum

SEDA College engages students in their education through their interest and passions such as Sport, High Performance and Building and Trade. Students complete the Victorian Certificate of Education – Vocational Major (VCE VM) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificates.

The VCE VM is a recognised senior secondary qualification for students completing Years 11 and 12.

To obtain the qualification students must complete a minimum of 16 VCE VM units in the mandated minimum combination of 3 Literacy Skills 2 Numeracy Skills, 2 Personal Development Skills, 2 Work Related Skills and 180 hours of a Certificate II or III VET qualification. Remaining units can be made up of other VCE or VCE VM subjects.

In addition to this the VCE VM also has the standard VCE requirement that students must successfully complete four Unit 3 and 4 sequences, one of which must come from the domain of English.

The curriculum at SEDA College is developed by our expert teaching staff, in collaboration with Subject Specialists and our industry partners.

Our focus is on students developing the knowledge, skills and attributes sought by industry. Students are encouraged to immerse themselves in industry through well- chosen work placements, community events and various industry experiences to build a better understanding of professional environments. This experience facilitates our students acquiring the skills that will support their future educational and employment pathways.

Areas of Study

SEDA College students engage in Areas of Study that provide context and enhance learning through their interest in sport and recreation

Sport development program

Through a range of practical experiences, students learn about athlete training and development, data analysis, anatomy/physiology, energy systems, training principles, nutrition, and sport specific training. Through the VCE VM Literacy Skills units students will work in groups, developing their collaborative, problem solving and teamwork skills as they put their ideas into action.

SEDA College aims to develop a student’s physical and mental wellbeing to cope with the things that life throws at them. With a strong literacy focus, Healthy Living involves students investigating respectful relationships, drugs and alcohol, safe partying and social inclusion all of which aim to better equip students within our current society.

Through MyPLAN meetings, the work that students do within the Areas of Study and on Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placements, students will explore career pathways in real work settings and acquire transferrable skills that employers value. Students explore the value of volunteering, while building their resume and connecting with key professionals in their chosen industry. SWL provides students with a hands-on learning experience one day a week starting from Term 2. Students gain an in-depth understanding of the duties they might be expected to perform in the workplace.

The VCE VM Personal Development Skills units provides the framework for projects in this Study Area. Students develop an understanding of the influence of sport in the community and how it can shape culture, behaviour and bring people together as they link with community groups to organise and run community projects and activities.

Sporting clubs have a considerable influence on community life and culture. With a strong VCE VM Work Related Skills and Numeracy focus, students will have the opportunity to consult with sporting bodies and associations to plan, organise, design, and manage their own club.

The students’ work placements and the structured workplace learning (SWL) that ensues, informs this integrated Study Area. Building and Trade

This Study Area is designed to build student knowledge and skills in managing their own mind and body for the demands of the building and construction industry. Students are exposed to a range of resources relating to exercise, nutrition and mental health to help them develop a holistic approach to coping in a physically demanding work environment.

We encourage students to create projects for themselves and the community using a broad range  of trade skills like plastering, bricklaying, carpentry and wall and floor tiling. Students will study both traditional and contemporary approaches to building and learn how to use emerging technologies. There is a focus on ‘Green Building’ and the need for creating environmentally friendly living spaces. They will get the chance to examine 5-Star Rating Systems in the building and construction industry.

This Study Area focuses on developing leadership and management skills. Students will learn a variety of skills ranging from developing a business proposal to starting and running a business. We will help students develop the skills to manage both their time and money.

We recognise the need for SEDA College students to grow and develop in the areas of communication, problem-solving and teamwork. We want to empower them to be global citizens and find innovative solutions to problems. For this study area, students will undertake activities including building and repair work, teaching skills to children or organising community projects.

learning Environment

The number one factor attributed to positive student outcomes is the teacher. Our ‘one teacher, one classroom’ model enables our teachers to take on a true mentoring approach.

Our teachers will walk alongside and support the individual journey of our students as they complete their secondary education. SEDA College teachers are experts in developing and maintaining positive teacher-student relationships. Mentor-style relationships are formed between teachers and students through their shared passions and interests.

This mutual connection enhances the bond our students have with their class and the school as a whole. In addition, the College has well developed support services available for all students. These include:

Two days a week an additional staff member is in the classroom to assist individualised student learning. They work with students who need to be extended academically and those that require additional academic support.

SEDA College has in place a team to support students with any wellbeing issues. They work with external practitioners and organisations to ensure all students have access to the best options available. We have integrated the learnings of Positive Education into the College program. Applying the philosophies of The Resilience Project (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness), in conjunction with our role as a lead school in the Respectful Relationships initiative, enables a wellbeing focus in the day to day learnings of our students.

The College Pathways team works individually with each student to educate and help them develop their pathway opportunities. This is done through supporting the Structured Workplace Learning process and identifying possible education and employment pathways. As part of the annual school fees, each student receives a laptop enabling access to the curriculum for the year ahead and their SEDA College uniform. For each of our students this enhances the bond they share with their class and the school as a whole.

MyPLAN is a digital portfolio that supports students to track their individual goals, achievements, experiences, and growth during their time at SEDA College. Underpinning MyPLAN are the Work Skills and Personal Habits, which have been identified as important attributes, attitudes, and mindsets to develop in order to succeed at SEDA College and beyond. Development of the MyPLAN portfolio is supported with timetabled MyPLAN sessions in class and regular MyPLAN meetings between teachers, parents, and students. The five core Work Skills we believe are essential for student development are:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Problem-Solving
  • Self-Awareness
  • Planning & Organising

MySEDA is the Learning Management System (LMS) that students, parents and staff use as their central hub for communication, teaching and learning. MySEDA supports parents and guardians to stay connected with real-time access to student assessment, grades, reports, industry experiences and important notifications. It is available online and as a smartphone app.
